Vaccination

Puppies are born vulnerable but mother-nature ensured safety for little fur balls through mother's milk. First milk, colostrum, is rich in antibodies and give puppies protection against viruses until they are 8 to 10 weeks old. Antibodies in mom’s milk neutralize most vaccinations if given too early so early vaccination is not effective. Maternal protection will start fading at around 8 weeks and that is when I do first vaccination for my puppies against distemper and parvovirus. The second set of the same vaccines is done in 4 weeks when puppies are 12 weeks old. In my experience I find that 2 sets of vaccination provide full protection. At 16 weeks or 4 weeks after the second set of vaccination I do titer test to ensure immunity to these highly contagious and life-threatening viruses. I repeat the titer test at 1 year of age and if needed do a booster shot. Recent studies show that a lot of dogs protected up to 9 years with initial vaccination.

A variety of vaccinations are available but not all puppies need every vaccination. The shots your puppy needs is based on exposure risk. If you live in a city, for example, and your puppy never exposed to ticks, there is no need for Lime vaccination. Be advocate for your puppy, more vaccines does not mean healthier dog.
