 Puppies Personality Testing

All puppies have their unique personalities and as a breeder I can start to observe and make notes as early as 4 weeks of age until puppies are ready to go home. As puppies develop, they change from day to day. Personalities and temperaments are not set in stone at birth but develop from experience, socialization and consequences of learning. Personality Tests Are Not Perfect but give some indication for energy level, social skills, sounds sensitivity, fearfulness, aggression, reactivity and much more. There is no Perfect Pup for everyone as each and every one of us has different idea of what Perfect Pup should be like.

Information you provided in application form will be used to match a puppy to your family. You are welcome to come for a visit, ask specific questions about individual puppy and give more information about yourself to help the selection process.

At 6 weeks of age Volhard’s Puppy Aptitude testing is done and selection of families done by 7 weeks. In addition to testing, puppies reactions observed in various settings such as reaction to grooming, new people, new environment and noise sensitivities at different times and age. Extra work is done with puppies that show undesirable behaviors and new owners informed if there is a concern and what to watch for.

Unfortunately, test results at this early age are not always reliable predictor of puppy personality as an adult. Personality of a dog also change overtime as each dog is placed in different environment and has owners with different personalities.

Learning about specific breed traits can help lead you in the right direction. Also it is very important for you to decide what kind of ownership you are looking for in terms of your life style and the breed you choose. Lagotto Romagnolo and Dogo Argentino are working breeds, active, adventurous, smart and eager to learn. They need to be engaged in mental and physical activities daily, rain or shine. Ask other owners of the breed you interested in to see similarities in traits, meet the parents of your potential puppy.

Please do your research about the breed. As much as I would like to have a Crystal Ball to predict the future, I don't. I do my absolute best to provide puppies with enriched environment, socializing and training and placing puppies with appropriate families to the best of my understanding of each family needs based on assessment of the puppy at 6 to 7 weeks.
